The project team has agreed a set of design changes following consultation on the Market Square Renewal proposals.
The revised layout keeps the square flexible for civic events while making everyday movement safer and more comfortable. It also responds to detailed comments from traders about deliveries, waste collection and the need to protect trading pitches during construction.
What changed
- Two pedestrian crossings have been widened and aligned with the busiest desire lines.
- Loading bays have been moved closer to side streets so servicing can happen without blocking the main pedestrian route.
- Additional seating is proposed near the market canopy, with a mix of backed benches and informal perch points.
- The central event space has been kept clear so markets, performances and civic gatherings can continue to be hosted.
Next steps
The final design will be considered by the council in March 2026. The Statement of Community Involvement will accompany the decision report and remain available publicly.
